An Italian August in Sperlonga // Super 8 + 120 + 35mm + Polaroids

August 18, 2020

It’s hard to remember now but there used to be a time that one could travel and it was rather lovely. Last year around this time I had the chance to travel with some friends to their family’s vacation home in Sperlonga, Italy and I couldn’t pass that up! It was a brief but relaxing trip just hanging out in this small beach town halfway between Rome and Naples. A bit different than American beach towns and I am for it!

I did, of course, have to bring some cameras and, if ya know me at all, it wasn’t just one. I did manage to fit them into a small shoulder sling though so it wasn’t too bad. A small Super 8 camera with Ektachrome, a friend’s TLR medium format camera, a little 35mm compact and my favorite Polaroid camera with some expired film.

Had some fun with the Super 8 throughout the week and mainly just chose to shoot little Italian scenes and then the occasional wild boat ride. I hand processed the film at Mono No Aware in Brooklyn, a great little non-profit I help with sometimes. Also shooting medium format while traveling was different. Given the slow pace and fewer exposures, the photos weren’t quick snapshots but I think the results were worth it.

We didn’t do much, which was a change of pace for Stephanie and I but we quickly adapted and enjoyed it. Italian life is totally foreign (for lack of a more fitting term) to us Americans. The streets were empty before 10am (which now makes the photos give off erie COVID era vibes) and an early afternoon coffee break was the norm. Not much of a coffee drinker myself but didn’t mind the pace of life. Nightlife even for kids continued pretty late in the streets which explained the deserted mornings.

Our friend’s family home was quite vertical and narrow but so quaint and had an incredible rooftop view of the town, especially at sunset. Many evenings were spent drinking wine and have some fresh mozzarella there. I miss it!

We rented a small motor boat a couple of the days for some brief excursions to small coves and even a little island for lunch and wine. Just getting off of the land and looking back at the cute little town was amazing. Things may have gotten a bit rowdy on the boat as we sped around. Not going to lie. And we did run out of gas at one point on the water which was a bit awkward but we survived. We also made a brief stop in Naples to see the city of Pompeii which was pretty amazing and of course for some fantastic pizza and a speeding ticket as well. What can ya do!

These days, such a trip seems like such a fairy tale, and even then it was. Looking forward to more goofy and relaxing travels with friends in the future when we all can travel again! Until then, still lifes with my plants will have to do. I’ll leave ya with a portrait of Stephanie and I on the TLR courtesy of my friend, Alex.

"How to Wear a Jean Jacket" with Demi Ramos // Super 8 + Polaroids + 35mm

May 30, 2020

Before the pandemic really locked down NYC, I was shooting portraits as a creative outlet and mixing various cameras and formats. I chatted with Demi who was playing a concert with another musician I’d worked with and we met up for a quick shoot back in February.

I shot just a bit of expired Super 8 film that day and edited it down into a little fashion film featuring a taste of Demi’s personality while rocking a vintage jean jacket of mine.

Also shot some large format, Polaroids and 35mm and played around with putting together a wardrobe of sorts, which led to this retro set. I didn’t get a chance to get most of this film processed before the quarantine so I finally figured out how to process it at home myself and loved the results!

When all this dust settles in NYC, I’ll definitely hit up one of her shows because I know Demi goes hard!

NYFW SS2020 Street Style + Kid Super // Super 8 + Polaroids + 120

March 21, 2020

Last fall, had some time to finally check out NYFW a bit and capture it on film. Definitely a small handful of photographers out there during fashion week shooting film and even smaller shooting Super 8 and Polaroids so figured it’d be something a bit outside of the standard. Even managed to get backstage at the Kid Super show to shoot some Super 8!

Spring Street Studios in SoHo is the main location for many of the fashion shows since it split up it’s single location shows that used to be held in Lincoln Center. This makes for a variety of strange and interesting locations like the COACH show I went to on the highline and the Kid Super fashion show inside an under construction building in Williamsburg.

Like my friend and fashion street style photographer, Dan Bassini, I didn’t have an invite to any of the shows (until a last minute favor from a friend for the Kid Super show) so I primarily strolled around the areas where the shows were to grab some portraits. I primarily shot with my Polaroid 110B which definitely drew a lot of surprised looks as well as a Mamiya C330 medium format camera, also a looker. Without autofocus and all manual, it required some waving of the cameras and polite requests to get portraits but in the end, was worth it. The Super 8 I shot outside of Spring was a casual but fun avenue to get “moving portraits” of the models.

The COACH show at the highline was truly a mass of big names and people attending and the crowd showed. Anna Wintor and a variety of other larger names outside of my knowledge passed through the crowd to attend the show.

With Kid Super, an NYC friend happened to be producing the show and managed to get me backstage of the show featuring the hip-hop artist, Action Bronson, to shoot some Super 8 and 35mm BTS. Was a dope show featuring garments made entirely out of recycled fabrics. It was a weekend highlight. Shot some quick 35mm shots during and after the show of the people and outfits at that show and there were some real standouts.

Jazz Age Lawn Party 2019 // Super 8 + 16mm + Polaroids

September 3, 2019

Back at it again with this year’s trip to the marvelous Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governor’s Island in New York City. For those unaware, the Jazz Age Lawn Party is a yearly event taking place on a weekend in both in June and August where you travel out to the really beautiful island off the southern tip of Manhattan and have a day filled with jazz, champagne and dancing. Everyone dresses up in their finest 1920’s threads (some of it is genuine vintage clothing from the time period!) and enjoy a day relaxing.

I always go with the amazing Penumbra Foundation’s tintype booth they run every year. They shoot actual tintypes on large format 4x5 and 5x7 cameras. I document their booth as well as the event on Super 8 and this year I added some 16mm into the mix as well. The Super 8 was B&W Tri-X self-processed at MONO NO AWARE, a cinema arts non-profit I work with in Brooklyn, and the 16mm was color negative shot on a Bolex H16 and processed/scanned at the new Kodak NYC lab! You can see some of the footage from the day below!

A fun little snippet in there is when part of the cast of the upcoming Broadway show and Steven Spielberg directed film adaptation of West Side Story. Probably around 8 of the cast members were at the event just enjoying the day and couldn’t help but get a tintype of the crew to immortalize the day. They were a lot of fun and really loved their tintype. I later caught a portrait of two of them on some instant film which is featured at the top of this post.

Aside from documenting on motion film, I always can’t resist bringing a few still cameras to take some portraits because the outfits are always incredible. I brought along a Polaroid 110B with some Instax Wide film as well as a modified Instax Wide 300. Bringing along cameras that were at least closer to the correct time period (albeit still from the 50s technically) is a treat because they always get a lot of looks and questions as I walk around with them.

Also, while helping out the Penumbra Foundation with their booth, the tintype studio manager, Jolene Lupo, and I devised a very McGyver’d way to shoot a “mug shot” type double exposure on a single plate. Took a lot of ingenuity and several extra hands but the results were exactly as we’d hope for! This is the flipped scan since with a tintype, everything comes out inverted.

In the end, it was a hot but fun weekend to test out lots of different cameras and chat with some really inspiring artists working on their craft. And be sure to check out the previous years I’ve gone: 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015.

Hub Day NYC 18 - 02.jpg

H Collective - Hub Day NYC // Super 8 + Polaroids + 35mm

March 15, 2019

Recently I stumbled upon a creative collaboration network of sorts called H Collective or The Hub. So I went to their Hub Day meetup last summer at Mona Liza Studios in Bushwick, Brooklyn with a half roll of expired Kodak Super 8 film, a Polaroid camera and some 35mm film in a point and shoot. Figured why not. Check the chopped up Super 8 film I shot at the event below.

Basically, they connect artists with brands; so photographers models, hair and make up artists and videography and lots of other creative types can meet and then connect to brands that want them to shoot. I wanted to check it out. See what was up and get some cool shots in the process.

Met some cool people and despite the on and off torrential downpour that day, managed to get some cool shots at the various shooting set ups they had through the warehouse/studio space. Was definitely a cool vibe.

Cameras I used:

Super 8 - Canon 814XL-S // 35mm - Olympus Stylus Infinity // Polaroid - Polaroid SLR680
